WhatsApp announces new proxy support feature to bypass internet shutdowns

WhatsApp introduces a new feature that uses its proxy server capability to get around internet censorship.

One of the most popular messaging apps in the world, WhatsApp, usually serves as a crucial communication channel in our day-to-day activities of business and life. But if more governments and security organisations strive to control information flow in new ways, it might also be disrupted, preventing citizens from getting important updates.
As a result, certain countries, particularly the US, are unhappy with WhatsApp’s choice to provide a backdoor in case of limitations and impediments. But Meta believes that this is a crucial service because of their efforts.
WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart explained a new feature in a series of tweets due to the demand for flexibility, and it was further explained in a blog post on the WhatsApp website.

“While many of us celebrated by texting our loved ones on WA, millions of people continue to be denied the freedom to speak freely and in private, whether in Iran or elsewhere.” Therefore, we are making it simpler for everyone to connect to WA using a proxy today.

WhatsApp Launches Proxy Support

According to Indian Express, WhatsApp, a messaging app owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms Inc., has announced that its users will be able to use a new proxy server option.

By utilising the feature’s proxy servers, WhatsApp users will be able to access the service in countries where the app has been prohibited.

Users can access the internet through a proxy server. Traffic from a computer or mobile device will, in this case, be forwarded through that server to access a particular service because it has its own IP address. In order to get past network restrictions on specific websites, proxy servers are widely used.

How To Bypass Internet Censors With Proxy Server Feature

If WhatsApp is blocked in a country, users can still access it by using a proxy. All users will be able to access WhatsApp through servers set up by volunteers and groups, thanks to the new capabilities.

According to WhatsApp’s FAQ page, proxy server addresses should be privately given to users who are unable to connect directly to the platform.Businesses or individuals “may set up a proxy” by using a server with open ports 80, 443, or 5222 and a domain name (or subdomain) that corresponds to the server’s IP address. This also safeguards the privacy of the proxy server.

Users can set up a proxy on their particular devices by following these instructions.

Android users:

  1. Make sure you are using the most current version of WhatsApp.
  2. In the Chats tab, tap More options > Settings.
  3. Tap Storage and Data > Proxy.
  4. Tap Use Proxy.
  5. Tap Set Proxy and enter the proxy address.
  6. Tap Save.
  7. A check mark will show if the connection is successful.
  8. If you can still not send or receive WhatsApp messages using a proxy, that proxy may have been blocked. You can long-press the blocked proxy address to delete it, then enter a new proxy address to try again.

iPhone users:

  2. Go to WhatsApp Settings.
