How does Code Division Multiple Access work?

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is a sort of multiplexing that facilitates various signals to occupy a single transmission channel. It optimizes the use of available bandwidth. The technology is commonly used in ultra-high-frequency (UHF) cellular telephone systems, bands ranging between the 800-MHz and 1.9-GHz.

How is data transferred in CDMA?

Verizon, Sprint and most other U.S. carriers use CDMA, which means no SIM card. All of the users transmit in the same wide-band chunk of spectrum. Each user’s signal is spread over the entire bandwidth by a unique spreading code. At the receiver, that same unique code is used to recover the signal.

Smartphones from AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM-compatible since both carriers use GSM technology like most of the rest of the world. However, while Verizon is a CDMA carrier, it sells smartphones that support both GSM and CDMA.
